In this article, we’ll talk you through how to set up a Twitter account for your business in five easy steps so you can start to reap the benefits for yourself!

Step One: Head to the Twitter Homepage

Simply enter your name, email address and choose a password before clicking the Sign Up For Twitter button at the bottom of the screen. You can either use the name of the person who will be managing the account or the name of your company.

In terms of email, choose a business email address that you check regularly.

Step Two: Choose a username

The next page will lead you to create your username and finalise your sign in details. While Twitter will offer you some name suggestions based on your sign-in details, try to come up with something that’s not just relevant to your business, but easy for customers to remember – we opted for the nice and simple handle @twentyoneagency, which says who and what we are.

Once you’ve completed this section, you’re all set up and ready to go!

Step Three: Get started

Twitter makes it easy for you to find some contacts to follow, and will recommend people it thinks you might know. It’ll also sneak a few well-known people in there, like celebrities, brands and businesses – you’re under no obligation to follow these people but, equally, there’s nothing to stop you!

If you have an Outlook, Yahoo or Gmail account, you’ll also be able to import any of your contacts who have Twitter accounts. Beware of inviting everybody, though – make sure you only tick those contacts who’ll be interested in what your business has to say.

To add people who aren’t in your email contact list, you can search for people to follow using the search bar at the top of the page. Simply enter their username, or just search for a term that’s relevant to your interests – say, “digital marketing”.

Step Four: Finish your profile

Adding a profile image and a well-written, informative bio is the last step to creating your profile. This step is especially important for in projecting a professional image to your followers and potential customers, so choose your words (and photo!) carefully!

It’s a good idea to include some keywords in your profile, so think about the services you offer and what people might search for to find you.

Step Five: Tweet away!

Start tweeting to connect with followers as well as share information about your business. There’s no need for a big announcement, really: Twitter moves so fast that your early tweets will soon be forgotten anyway!

Current trends are listed on the left hand side, so you can see what people are chatting about at the moment. These might not be relevant to you, but don’t worry – there’s a niche for everyone on a platform as big as Twitter!

Good things to tweet about? Your business, your services, what you’re up to at the moment, industry news. Try to include a mix: people don’t want all sales talk, but they don’t want to know minute details of your lunch every day, either!

Setting up a Twitter account is a great first step towards engaging with customers and others in your industry on social media.

Twitter is a pretty friendly place, so play around with the platform and see how you can use it to your advantage.
