How search engines work

Explaining how a search engine works can be a real challenge.

At Twentyone, we try to simplify the online jargon as much as we can to help you understand how it all works.

In our quest to help you understand how search engines work, we’d like to introduce you to Google’s newly released interactive infographic, explaining it in an easy, straightforward way.

It’s really interesting (click on the image to see the full infographic):

How Search Engines Work

Some big Google numbers:

  • – There are 30 trillion individual pages in search and is constantly growing.
  • – Google’s index is over 100 million gigabytes

There are over 200 ranking factors in their algorithm, falling into these categories:

  1. 1. Site and page quality
  2. 2. Freshness
  3. 3. Amount of spam (either pure spam, hidden text, user generated spam)
  4. 4. Domains that don’t yet have websites and little to no unique content – Google won’t show these in results
  5. 5. Thin content with little or no added value
  6. 6. Unnatural links to a site
  7. 7. Spammy free hosts and dynamic DNS providers
  8. 8. Cloaking or sneaky redirects
  9. 9. Hacked sites – often unsafe and used to spam links.
  10. 10. Unnatural links from a site – the site detects a pattern of manipulative outbound links such as ones that are paid for.

There’s lots of really interesting information available on the page. Familarising yourself with it will help you understand search engine marketing much better.
